This is a very interesting video on the lamprey eel here in Maine and it's potential positive effect on stream fisheries. I've never encountered on while fishing. They look really freaky to me.

Out and About On The Bay

Pat and I did some saltwater fishing for the first time this year (the fishing would be me). She did an excellent job of helmsman(or woman)ship  ..Fish were showing up on the sonar anywhere between 60 and 100 feet. I got down to them with my lead line and had a couple of bumps but that was all. No worrying about snagging bottom in 250 feet of water!  The sea temp was 60 degrees, at least near the surface.


So after a floating lunch and a stopover on a small island we came across some seals resting and sunning (not much of that) on Sprague's Ledge, which is completely submerged at high tide..We had an enjoyable 3 hours on the water before the weather started to turn.

First 2011 Bay Cruise

It was a beautiful day for our first bay cruise today with calm winds , bright blue skies and an incoming tide. Here are a few assorted photos. It was basically our salt water shake down cruise and it was a marvelous couple of hours spent on Penobscot Bay.

FINALLY !! SALMON SUCCESS!!!

I spent a drizzly, foggy morning today on Lake George this morning, continuing my spring of 2011  frustration filled landlocked salmon quest. Well today it finally happened..salmon success..I was very happy to bring to boat these two fine specimens. However, I did have to forgo my preferred  method of trolling streamer flies to go with an imitation smelt wobbler...I know, I know, the purity of my desires has been sacrificed and cheapened. What can I say but desperation brings on pressure and the overwhelming impulse to succeed. The little red devil on my right shoulder whispering into my ear , "use the wobbler Mikey", overcame the little angel on the other, defending goodness and righteousnesses, "stay with the streamer Mikey".  So I yielded to the tempting one, only to be rewarded..The future does not bode well for me..what's next? Becoming a worm dunker again?

The second one was a bit smaller.

 There were also a local gang of loons on the hunt..pretty cool sight.

Mystery Markings

I was out fishing and found this tree with these markings on it. The top edge of them were about 3 feet high. I guess they must have been made by a beaver? Just don't know for sure. But they sure do look odd to me. What do you think?
